Biography

Yunah Han was born in Busan, South Korea. She began playing classical piano as a child and won several competitions at a young age. By the age of fourteen, her interest and passion for jazz music had been awakened.

In 2010, she earned a bachelor's degree. Han draws inspiration from renowned pianists such as Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Lyle Mays. Following four years of study in Busan, she taught students in Seoul for five years. She performs live concerts every weekend, playing as a side musician in various bands.

 

However, in addition to her professional experience as a rhythm section player, Yunah felt a strong desire for personal expression and writing. She was also eager to explore the European jazz sound, which led her to pursue further studies in Europe. In 2015, Yunah left South Korea and enrolled at the Artez Conservatory in Arnhem, where she studied under pianists Robert-Jan Vermeulen and Jeroen Van Vliet, gaining new insights and perspectives.

After a year, she was willing to collaborate with more international musicians and further develop her skills. In 2016, she moved to Amsterdam to study jazz music at the conservatory with pianists Rob van Bavel, Karel Boehlee, Hans Vroomans, and Harmen Fraanje. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 2020.

 

Yunah Han's piano playing is exceptional in several ways. Firstly, she plays with a delicate touch, producing a powerful yet light and open sound. Additionally, her timing is precise and dynamic across various genres. Her improvisation skills are also impressive, taking solos in diverse and captivating directions that make for an exciting listening experience. She is skilled at expressing her imaginative and open-minded ideas through her piano music. With a varied repertoire of different genres, her performances are of a high standard.

 

Yunah Han composes her own music and arranges ensembles. Last year, she formed her piano trio and performed her songs with great energy and emotional involvement. She released her debut album, titled 'A Foggy Northern Forest', with bass player Mikolaj Sikora and drummer David Gimeno. This record offers a wide range of emotional atmospheres and showcases the promising musical future of the artist. The combination of her original compositions and piano playing style is well-executed, making it accessible to a diverse audience.

 

Yunah is currently completing her Master's studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam while simultaneously developing her music and participating in various projects. Han will be performing in upcoming concerts with her trio and is poised to become a valuable addition to the Dutch jazz scene.
